KS5 Maths and Further Maths at OASB
The OASB A-Level mathematics department nurtures our students’ love of the subject and teaches them all of the knowledge and skills required to read a pure mathematics degree at world-renowned universities. Our highly fluent mathematicians go on to study a wide variety of undergraduate courses including: engineering; economics; natural sciences; politics, philosophy and economics (PPE); and finance and accounting. A mathematics A-Level is highly valued by all levels of society. It has opened many doors for our young people including highly prestigious work experience and offers from Oxford and Cambridge. Ultimately, a student can access their dream job, whatever it may be, regardless of their background with an A-Level in mathematics. At OASB, two thirds of the cohort study maths or further maths. While the students join the sixth form recognising the value of A-Level mathematics, all leave with a love of the subject regardless of their future path.
To ensure every student is successful in mathematics, expert teachers deliver direct instruction, complemented by rich student discussion to develop deep understanding of mathematical concepts. The curriculum is split between pure and applied (statistics and mechanics) mathematics. The carefully-sequenced course also includes regular interleaved practice and bi-termly testing to develop each student’s mathematical knowledge. As a result, all of students have the intellectual confidence and curiosity to approach unfamiliar problems.
Our most enthusiastic mathematicians choose to take a second A-Level in Further Mathematics where they develop their understanding of the mathematical universe. Our KS5 family of mathematicians support one another throughout the course. They are resilient and hungry learners, who are intrigued by their one another's mistakes. As the year progresses, students will develop a mathematical dialogue with their teachers, interrogating sophisticated concepts to deepen their own understanding in preparation for their next steps.
