KS5 Psychology at OASB
We know that no matter what students of OASB go onto to do it will involve interacting and communicating with other people effectively and successfully. Our Psychology curriculum empowers our students to do this. Psychology at OASB aims to cultivate a passion and curiosity for why people behave the way they do. We want students to be able to draw upon core psychological perspectives to explain their own and other people’s behaviour.
Our curriculum is sequenced so that pupils learn the fundamental psychological concepts first with each topic building on this knowledge and allowing them to apply this to other contexts. Students begin by learning the core psychological perspectives to gain a sound understanding of the different ways in which we can explain human behaviour. Each topic then builds on this and we can use these perspectives to explain attachment, memory and psychopathological disorders (more general behaviours). In year 13 pupils then focus in on specific behaviours in the option subjects and use their knowledge from year 1 to explain gender, schizophrenia and aggression.
Research methods are interleaved throughout the two years so that pupils can make links between the practical aspects of studying behaviour and the topics they are learning.
Our students deserve an ambitious curriculum and we achieve this by ensuring that content is constantly interleaved throughout the course and pupils are exposed to different contexts in which they can apply this content to. Not only does this build a pupils’ application skills, but it also enables them to more effectively understand why people behave the way they do in the world around them which will equip them to be successful in any realm of occupation beyond their academic study. This provides our students with the choice and opportunity to study Psychology at undergraduate level and beyond.
